The hitherto anonymous Brush Type 2 was chosen to mark the first decade of our sister title RAIL magazine, while wearing BR's'Dutch' grey/yellow civil engineers' livery. To mark the occasion, 31116 was re-dedicated as RAIL Celebrity, and soon became a cult favorite with enthusiasts, turning up at depot open days and events around the BR network over the following few years. In between its celebrity outings, Bescot-based 31116 was kept busy hauling engineers' trains, plus the odd parcels and passenger service, and it carried this striking livery until withdrawal and eventual scrapping in 2003. Thanks to your votes, Accurascale's Class 31 recently scooped first prize in the'OO' Diesel and Electric Locomotive category in Model Rail's Model of the Year awards for 2024, and our model of 31116 forms part of the follow-up production run focusing on later BR and post-nationalisation era prototypes.
